Darkness v Light

As the days get shorter and darker, we can begin to feel the darkness seeping into our spirits.

Halloween parties and trick and treating are now pretty much part of our culture now, aren’t they? – the shops are full of witches, skeletons and vampires. This celebration of all that is dark and evil pushes against all that the Lord longs for our young people – light, life and hope.

But this is what Jesus came to bring! Even in the dark days of winter we can suddenly we get a shaft of light – a clear blue sky, a profusion of red berries on an evergreen bush, a burst of song from a robin. All these are reminders us that the darkness will never overcome the light.

Fighting Back

If you or your church are planning a light party for the end of October, what about giving books away to your guests? So they take the message of the good news of Jesus home with them?

(Church families/kids need encouragement, too!)

Here are some suggestions:

Nobody’s Dog for 6-9s

The Treasure Hunt for 8-11s

The Dove Stone for 10-12s

The City Kid for young adults.

All these books have an inspiring message of hope, gently woven into exciting stories kids will want to read again and again.

We have to fight back! Sometimes it seems there’s not much we can do against an ever-growing tide of evil, but buying a book and giving it away is a simple way churches can get the good news into homes in the community.

You can order these suggested books from your favourite Christian (or any other) bookshop worldwide, or direct from the dernierpublishing website. If you wish to order large quantities for a school or church, please get in touch with us. We would love to help you.

And we have some fabulous news!

We can’t end this newsletter without acknowledging the wonderful Eleanor Watkins, the hugely talented author of the Beech Bank Girls, Rebecca and Jade: Choices, Nobody’s Dog and Oliver’s Secret, who won the Outstanding Contribution to Christian Literature award at the recent Christian Resources Together event!

Eleanor absolutely deserves this award, having written over 50 books, many for children and youth, and we are delighted that her dedication to, and heart for writing, has been recognised in this way.

We are absolutely delighted for Eleanor… and we have more of her books coming out very soon! The next one, Who Invented Sisters? is a fun story about a young lad who has four big, bossy sisters… I read it to my grandson who absolutely loved it! We’ll keep you informed, of course.

More New Books

The sequel to The Dove Stone (The Capstone), by Pam Daunton, is currently at the editing stage, as is another lovely story from Mary Weeks Millard, Memory Makers. Please pray for these projects! We very much appreciate your support.

So don’t forget your books to bring light… and I’ll be in touch again soon.

It’s a pleasure to be working with you!

Janet
